Limited travel window for student visas?

I am planning on applying to a UK university and the UK Border Agency's website says that when I get my visa approval, I can travel to the UK at any time up until the expiration date on the visa. I found that information here: http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/faqs/5167621/2969423

However, I was browsing the international student section of the university's website when I discovered that, according to them, my visa is valid for entry to the UK for only three months, and if I don't enter the UK within three months of receiving my visa, I will be denied entry and have to start all over again. Perhaps I am missing something, but these seem like contradictory statements. Can someone provide me with the correct information? I emailed the school and they told me basically that they didn't know the answer and to try calling my local UK consulate. Thank you for your help!

If I could just clarify a bit more, I understand that for a 12 month student visa I am only allowed to enter the UK 1 month before the start of classes. This particular course of study begins in September 2010.

If I apply for my visa and am awarded the visa on (for instance) March 1, 2010, I am out of luck under the university's interpretation of the rules because I have until June 1 (three months) to enter the country. Obviously this would not be legal because I can't arrive until August 2010.

If I understand the UKBA's website correctly, I could receive my visa approval on March 1, 2010 and still enter the UK legally until September 2011. Obviously that would not be a good idea in terms of getting education!

If I am totally misinterpreting the rules then I would appreciate being set straight as well!
