USA citizen planning to move to UK

Post by hoy77 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi all,
I am a USA citizen planning to move to UK for family reason. I work as a Programmer(IT) in usa and have good income.
But When I calculated points for HSMP I can only get 30 for having a bachelor's degree.

Is there a way I can qualify for HSMP visa.

If I cannot get HSMP can I just go there on a visitor's visa (since usa citizens do not need a visa) and after staying there start applying for a visa.

Has anybody done that as a usa citizen?

I mean what could be worst If I just go there..that I do not get a job for few months(I am fine with that) but I know my skills is hot and I will eventually get a offer.

Can someone share a experience?

You can't apply for HSMP from within the UK on a visitor's visa. If the immigration officials also think that you're coming here to look for work then there's a chance of you getting a ban.

banned??
Not if I find a job and the employer and get the work visa.

I can always come back within 6 monts and go again.

You could get banned for deception and that is a 10 year ban.

IT market is on it's arse here, plus UK employers prefer UK experience so you'll struggle really. Lot's of pseudo-jobs that don't exist except to harvest CV's - recruiters get paid off those too as well as placement commission.

Plus your English is rather poor for someone from the USA, which won't look good to an employer.

It is not as straight forward as you think. First you have to allowed in to the UK, and if you are coming purely to look for work that is one strike against you. If you can afford to be away for 6 months, it is likely that you have given up or have lost your job, that is another strike against you, if you have no firm plans when you will leave the UK, that is another strike against you, if you do not have much money, another strike against you, if you have given up your place to live, another strike against you, if you have family reasons for wanting to come to the UK and so less incentive to return, well that is another strike against you.

Now say you do get in to the UK, you do not qualify for Tier 1 General (HSMP) and you only have a stamp in your passport that says "No work or resource to public funds". You then will have to start applying for jobs, and only the employers with a sponsor's licence or those who are willing to apply for one will meet your needs.

If you do find such an employer advertising, you will need to be the only suitable candidate, and note this is suitable candidate not the best candidate. Then you will have to leave the UK and come back, and if the employer has no licence they will have to apply for that before they can sponsor you. So the employer will have to be willing to keep the vacancy open for you.

Please also bear in mind that this time of year is slow for jobs, it is coming up to Christmas and people want their Christmas party. You will also have to compete with graduates who did not find a post on graduate programmes and those who have been made redundant.

Please also do not forget the rest of your competition, such as all those who have Tier 1 General and are actually available for work straight away.

The worst that can happen is that you come, get caught out in a lie trying to get in the UK and you therefore end up with a ban.

None if you've only got 30 points.
