Question about moving to Scotland with family.

Post by ryan500 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 3:00 am

Hi guys, need some help here. I live in Canada, am 28 and have a wife and 3 kids.

Her parents are born and raised in Scotland and have lived in Canada for about 30 years. We are looking into moving to Scotland where they are from.

Would i/we need a work visa? Is it possible they can sponsor me? Anyone know where i should be looking for this info? I have googled to the end of the internet but have no solid answers for that situation.

I don't even know where to start. Well besides right here i guess.

Thanks, Ryan.

Are your in-laws British citizen? If yes then they possibly can pass citizenship to your wife. If that is the case then you could apply for a spousal visa as to exactly which visa you get I believe will depend on how long you have been married for. kids would also need visas.

I am sure others will correct me if I am wrong and also add other routes you could use.

Good starting point would be the UK Border Agency website
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/
and this forum of course

True. If any of the parent was born in the UK and have British nationality, then your wife can apply directly as British national, but not your children. You need to apply for spouse visa and kids as dependant.

You will also need to show that you will be able to support yourselves financially on arrival in the UK without claiming Public Funds, and have adequate accomodation available.
Without confirmed job offers you would need considerable savings. The visa fees alone aren't cheap.

Meats link will show you that the initial spouse visa fee is £585 just for you, and you'll need visas for the children.
Under current rules (due to change) Indefinate Leave to Remain (being replaced with Probationary Citizenship) applied for after 2 years is £850 postal, £1020 in person. This again is for one person application.
Nationality (several years down the line) is currently £720 per application.
In order to apply for settlement however, your wife will first have to apply for her British Nationality.
