Applying for Naturalisation, questions

Hi to everyone

I'm going to apply for naturalisation and have few questions:

1: Passport is going to expire on 31 December 2009, do I need to renew it before making an application?

2: What document do I need to provide for comprehensive sickness insurance?

3: What does the letter from the current employer have to include? Example: Contract length, Salary etc

4: UKBA states I should include Bank statements, however I've been a student for past 4 years and just started working, my bank balance has been very good because of tuition fees etc. Should I still include them?

I might be wrong, but i thought that you can no longer count student years towards naturalisation?

If it's naturalisation via marriage it's allowed. If it's by student, work or ancestry visa or by 10 year legal stay then it's not.

I'm confused.

I have ILR with 10 year rule and had it for past 13 months, are you saying my student years don't count towards naturalisation? meaning I have to wait for another 4 years?

I think there's something wrong with this question.

Issues about comprehensive sickness insurance, work contracts and bank balances are NOT issues for naturalisation. They are more likely to be issues for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

To the original poster, are you perhaps applying for ILR? There is a difference between that process and applying for citizenship (i.e., naturalisation).

When you apply for citizenship, the current rules are most interested in your (a) continuity of qualifying residence and (b) good behaviour. Whether or not you're employed or a student or skint is largely irrelevant unless it impacts upon (a) and (b) above.

No ur fine - I mean if married to a BC then any other time under a valid visa would count towards naturalisation, other wise u'd have to wait the extra year.

In ur case it's one year after you got ILR - don't panic!

Further to my last point, this section from the UKBA website on naturalisation evidence:

If you are a student, you should provide:

* a letter from the educational establishment confirming that you were enrolled on a course of study throughout the qualifying period; and
* evidence that you have comprehensive sickness insurance cover for you and your accompanying family members.

is only for EU/EEA/Swiss applicants proving their activities in the UK over the past five years. If you have attained your ILR through the 10-year route, that doesn't apply to you.

On this webpage ( http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... documents/ ), you should ignore the documents that lie under the heading "Evidence required from European Economic Area and Swiss nationals". Only supply the info that relates to your case!

Your student years are fine. As long as you have spent at least a total of five years legally in the UK in any capacity and the last year free from time restrictions (which you do, as you have had ILR for the last 13 months), you are free to apply for naturalisation. Good luck!

Sorry, just abit paranoid. Because I just made the transsition from student to employee, my case has become more complicated and I'm trying to get the right documents and questions.

So you think I should still provide last 6 months of my bank statements even thought they are well over drawn? bank balance is getting better now :D with monthly salary, guess I should show that too?

No! It's irrelevant. They don't care if you have 1 million in your account or 1 penny. Nowhere on the application or in the guidance is a request for bank statements ever made. Where did you come up with that?

The only problem is if you are a bankrupt. That's a problem, as it demonstrates bad character from the Home Office's point of view.

OK, well I was worried the fact I was well into my overdraft limit (-800) through out university, which I thought would not look too good.

As long as you are not looking to travel out of the country, it doesn't matter if you apply with an expired passport. There is no requirement that you have a valid one when you lodge an application.

Did you not read my posts above? Unless you are an EEA/Swiss student applicant, you do NOT need to provide insurance proof. Seriously, why are you making things more difficult than they are? Again, you only need to provide the documents that are relevant to your case.
