Liechtenstein and Directive 2004/38/EG

Just in case anybody is interested in the current state of the implementation of the Directive in the principality, here is some info I got yesterday from their EEA coordination unit. The new law (Personenfreizügigkeitsgesetz, PFZG) will be in second reading in parliament this month and is scheduled to come into effect in spring 2010. The Personenfreizügigkeitsgesetz (PDF, German) became law on January 1, 2010. Article 6(2) is quite clear about residence card holders but I have yet to wait for the repsonse from the Swiss embassy in London.

Their answer is that residence card holders would still need a visa from them if they were to enter through Switzerland (though the visa would be obviously necessary just for Switzerland). But if they entered, for example, (Yes, they indeed wrote 'for example'. As if you would have any other choice...!) through Austria no additional visa would be needed. Maybe I have a chance this year to check whether the Swiss border guards at the Liechtensteinian-Austrian border do indeed know about this.
