Council Tax Benefits and "No Public Recourse To Funds&q

Post by bym007 » Tue Dec 15, 2009 10:57 pm

Hi,

I have been a student, and claiming council tax benefit (100% waiver) while I have been renting a flat.

Now while applying for PSW, I am wondering if I did anything illegal ?

Any help please ?

As a student you're entitled to not having to pay council tax.

If you're not a student now and you're still not paying council tax then yes you are currently breaking the law and should notify the council of your change in circumstances.

Many thanks for the quick reply (do you ever sleep, lol!!).

I was only concerned about my time at university, and just wanted to ensure that I did not break any law (and steal ££££s from my council by accident).

EDIT: So when I fill Section "O" of PSW, I replied no to O1 (receiving any public funds), but in O2, council tax benefit is mentioned as well.

So I am wondering if it is a public fund benefit or not ?

There is a clear distinction between claiming council tax benefit and being exempted from council tax, (at least as far as case workers are concerned). So as a student, you fit in "exempted" category and that should be fine.
