HELP in obtaining birth certificate for passport

Post by tryingtohelp1 » Wed Jan 06, 2010 4:24 pm

Hi,

I have no idea if im posting this in the right place but i'd really like some advise please.

Im doing this on behalf of my step dad. He was born in the middle east back in 1966 to a british mother. She came back to the UK with him when he was a few months old as her marriage ended and they divorced.

He has never been abroad since and we would all love to go on a family holiday together but he doesnt have his birth certificate to apply for a passport. He no longer speaks with his mother and is desperate to find out if he can apply for a passport. (she has been of no help to him).

I applied for a birth certificate for him but they said i didnt give enough info and they couldnt find one.

What should we do next?
He has his own business here and therefore has a N.I number etc etc, what should our next steps be?

Sorry if it sounds silly but we have no idea!

Was his birth registered with the authorities in the country of his birth? Or with the authorities of his father's nationality? Or with the British Embassy?

He may not even be a British citizen, or have any legal status in the United Kingdom. But finding a birth certificate should be his first priority.

What travel document was used to bring him to Britain?

His mum assured him everything was done legally to bring him over in the 1960's with her. I know very little about this but i think he was on her passport? We will find out more from her but as i say its hard as they are not speaking and live at opposite ends of the country.

He has worked in the U.K all his life, what would be best to do next if his mum wont help?

Perhaps start by seeing of the Home Office / relevant British Embassy have any immigration or passport record for him. But he needs to see an immigration lawyer first.

You still haven't told us anything about his father ...
