US son needs UK citizenship

Post by Tara2b » Tue Jan 05, 2010 4:02 pm

I am a naturalized citizen with US and UK dual citizenship. My parents were English and I became a citizen about 20 years ago after being raised in the US. My son was born in the US, his father is American. I cannot find any information as to how he can become a UK citizen other than the ancestory route, which takes a long time and he would need to work here legally during the process. He is a general contractor so he doesn't fit into the tier of shortfall jobs. Any help is appreciated.

Tara, would you please answer a few things before your question can be addressed:

1) When (month/year) was your son born? Did you register his birth at a British consulate in the States before he was one year old?

2) Where and when (approximately) were you born? It's not entirely clear if you are a naturalised American or British citizen from your post.

3) Where and when (approximately) were your parents born?

4) Does your son's father have a claim to any other Commonwealth nationality (e.g., Canada, Australia, India). Unless your son is or can become a Commonwealth citizen, he cannot apply for an Ancestry visa if UK citizenship is not open to him. The US is not in the Commonwealth, and as such, its citizens may not avail themselves of this visa.

Son obtaining UK citizenship

Post by Tara2b » Fri Jan 08, 2010 4:11 pm

Hi Newperson?

I was born in the US and became a citizen in 1995 after my son was born in 1971. My parents were born in England between 1915 and 1920 and my son's father has no known ancestors born in any UK territory etc. My concern is that if he can't live and work here then I will have to go back to the US when I get older as he would be concerned about me living here without anyone to check on me and be with me.

thanks for your help.
Tara :D
