Getting an illegal job puts the OP in many precarious positions

She's already illegal and liable to be picked up. If she wanted to go she could have gone a long time ago. But she's living here. That costs money. Would you rather she lived on benefits? Or the proceeds of crime?

It's because she's got a child depending on her that I gave her that advice. First, she's not going to be living "below ground" for "14 years". She's going to continue living for the next seven years in the same way she spent the last seven. She isn't clinging on to a "whisper of hope" either - with the money for a good lawyer at a conservative estimate she's got at least a 75% chance of succeeding.

That's obviously not the legal thing to do. Many would argue it's not fair on the rest of the population. And they are right. But for this woman at this time and based on the situation she's in, that seems the best option.

Scared&Confused, I'm wondering how you support yourself. You say you never worked here. You could have come with a lot of money but you say you don't have money for a decent lawyer, so maybe you aren't loaded. OK, maybe your partner is supporting you. But it looks like his parents are (part) supporting him. And you don't take benefits.

How have you been supporting yourself?
