USA re entry question

Hi, I am a UKC, been living in the US for 7 yrs and a Green Card holder. Last April I returned to the UK to visit sick parent and stayed on nursing mum until she recently passed away. Looks like the earliest I am able to return to the USA is May 2010 due to clearing up mum's affairs, selling house etc. I gather I may need a re-entry pass as I will have been out of the USA for over 1 yr... which was quite unintentional at the onset. Any advice as to how I file that whilst in the UK as I think that has to be applied for before leaving the US?? Many thanks
