From work permit - where to switch...?

Guys, hi,

I was planning to move from work permit to a student visa to study for accountacy qualification or do PHD after my work permit expires and I was told that I will have to leave the country and apply from the overseas consulate for a student visa!

If student visa does not work, what are other visa types I can switch to while I am in the UK.

If you have held your WP for 4 years you may apply for ILR. It is best to switch to HSMP now if you are eligible. If this is the case then I would suggest hold back on the study and do such post ILR issuance. Time spent on WP, HSMP and related categories counts towards 4 yr period to ILR, time as a student only counts towards 10 yrs residence rules...which one would you rather pursue...of course I'm assuming ILR is a goal for you...if it isn't then my comments are moot.

Are you looking at this backwards? Options include spouse of settled person/EEA national, innovator, if you are in the correct age bracket and a commonwealth national you may enlist in the armed forces etc....one would have to assess your personal circumstances to evaluate your options e.g. if you are married already then forget about my initial switch criteria.

Thanks for such a thorough explanation.
I don't have enough work experience for HSMP, I have been on a work permit only for 1 year, so permanent residence is also excluded, do not have £ 25000 to invest as an innovator,and do not want to marry a passport instead of a man.

So I guess I should start packing my bags...

And, yes, new employers feel very demotivated to hire me when they hear about work permit.

It may help if prospective employers were aware that a new wp in the same/similar role would be considered as Tier 1 thus eliminating the need for advertising - such is the usual reason for their understandable disintrest.

I know, Kayalami, but it did not help either. They are afraid of the very words "work permit".

We've seen the same (looking ahead - still student here). Where do all these Work Permit friendly employers live?

I had 5 job rejections solely on the basis of visa. Though I am already a work permit holder.

I guess these are all company's jobs, i quite understand you and have the similar situation. Maybe you can try the university jobs---not mind WP

Universities usually hire insiders (students), soo...not sure it will work.
