German Residence Permit Renewal

Post by attraction » Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:47 pm

Hi everyone, I am a newbie on this forum and hope that someone can help me with the following questions about renewing my limited German residence permit (aufenthaltserlaubnis). I am a New Zealander and my permit expires the first week of May.

1. How early should I apply for a renewal?
2. Can I apply to renew it in London at the German Embassy as I am likely to be there when the permit expires?
3. Can I still go ahead and apply for a renewal of the permit if my husband decides that he does not wish to renew his? He was the one who obtained his permit first and then I obtained mine when I joined him in Germany.

Thank you so much for your time.

Cheers

1. ASAP - my gf's second one took AGES......

2. I would imagine so if u have residency in UK, which doesn't seem likely if u are German resident. ie u can't if on tourist visa...

3. If u r a dependant of a German WP holder no, if u have ur own WP, yes.

German Residence Permit Renewal

Post by attraction » Sun Feb 28, 2010 9:19 pm

Thanks for that Wanderer. Yes, I have my own permit in my passport.

I am currently traveling around Europe. I assume then that I will have to go back to the same city in Germany where I applied for my permit originally?

Cheers

The city where u reside in Germany, presumably the one where you are working.

I don't ge it tho, if u r travelling u can't be working and therefore cannot have a valid work permit in order to be resident, unless there's some funny rules for Kiwis....

Can u tell us exactly what is your status visa-wise in Germany?

Hi Wanderer, I'm sorry but I guess I should have made it clearer. My husband and my residence permits are limited ones and we are not allowed to work in Germany. The immigration only required my husband to show health insurance and sufficient funds to support himself. The permit was issued for the duration of his travel insurance. When I joined him a couple of months later, we went to the immigration and my permit was obtained quicker because of him but I still had to show proof of my travel insurance

We were told by the immigration that we could renew our residence permits for as long as we renewed our travel insurance.

It is my intention to go back to Germany and spend more time there as a volunteer at eco communities. However my husband is not so sure. And that is why I would like to know whether I can still renew mine if he does not.

I hope that gives you more of an idea of my situation.

Thanks for your time...

Cheers

We were both working as volunteers (without pay) at an eco community. The issuing office was at Kleve.
