Does bad credit affect holiday visa?

Post by aztecblue » Wed Mar 03, 2010 5:30 pm

Hi there,

I was a student in London but due to a family emergency had to return home. During this time my visa expired
and unfortunately i had to leave my study debt behind. I have not been working so i've been unable to repay the
monies owed. I do have intentions of repaying the monies owed on my London credit card.

A friend of mine is getting married in London in a few weeks and i'm hoping to attend the wedding.
I have to apply for a holiday visa to enter London.

My questions is: will my bad debt affect my holiday visa application in any way?

Any advice?

Wouldn't you be required to show proof of funds at the time of applying? Seeing as you're unable to repay the monies you owe in the UK, I take it that may be an issue in itself?

I don't think UK consular services abroad do credit checks - however, I would expect that there may be questions arising around your study status and your return to the UK which could involve you needing to divulge your financial status.

Aren't you eligible to do an IVA and get this sorted?

Thanks for the reply Foxy. With regards to the IVA, i'm not sure how it works. Would i be eligible if i'm
outside the UK? Plus my outstanding debt is roughly 2500 pounds.

Rather than forking out for a visa and ticket why not repay a slice of your debt?

Bad credit doesn't play any part in visit visa applications' decision made at foreign mission post.
