Do I list previous UK work experience? (Possibly sensitive)

Post by blt178 » Tue Jan 31, 2006 10:36 pm

Tough situation here... I went to the UK on a Working Holiday Maker visa in 2000. I found a good position in London where I was hired as a "Call Centre" person but actually did a lot of Marketing coordination.

However, when I was hired they did it under the table and didn't process taxes and told me not to apply for my NIN.

I was only there for 5 months so I didn't make a big deal out of it...

The company has since been sold and doesn't exist any more.

QUESTION: Is it worth putting it down as a part of my work experience since there's no company left to track OR is it inviting disaster? I'd hate to leave off UK work experience IF it might make me look attractive...

Firstly, I wouldn't condone not paying your taxes, but in this case it was the company's responsibility to pay your PAYE tax and National Insurance contributions and arguably you could argue ignorance and that you thought it was above board.

Secondly, what on earth would make you think any prospective employer is going to go through all the trouble of checking that a company you worked for 6 years ago was paying your taxes? You give big brother more credit than he deserves.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

Yes, I'm not proud of the "sneakiness"... I'm normally a person that won't even cross the street without the walklight on. I didn't know how to argue that my bosses SHOULD pay, so I felt I had no choice but to go with it...

All "excuses" aside... I suppose you are right... it's so far in the past and the company's not even around anymore... Anything that might help my case!
