Information on a Fiancée Visa

Post by Medina » Fri Feb 10, 2006 12:12 am

I'm not sure where to start on this, but I need to know approximates on how long a Fiancée Visa can take to be processed and approved and exactly how much my man and I need to have or make in order to show that we can take care of ourselves without public funds. For the record we've been together for nearly two and a half years, and I just spent 6 months with him in Scotland on a visitor's visa. Any help would be appreciated.

I get the impression that the processing time varies depending on where you're applying - you might like to look at the website of the Visa Section in the country concerned - you can find it on www.fco.gov.uk - there's a drop-down menu in the top left corner: go for "UK Embassies Overseas"

As to the amount of money you need, I think they deliberately don't publicise this, but the answer really boils down to "enough". If your fiancé's salary is above the minimum wage, and other married couples are able to live on that salary without having to fall back on benefits, then that should be sufficient. I think the length of your engagement would also have a bearing on it, given you won't be able to work until after you're married. They may also be concerned as to whether there's a reasonable prospect of your finding employment once the marriage has taken place and you're legally able to work.

Someone else, with personal experience, might be able to express this better than I....

Medina, as a Moderator I am able to see the IP address used by you when you posted your message, and therefore work out where in the world you are!

I think I can say that the waiting time as regards fiancée visa applications is minimal ... and indeed the application can be submitted online.

What you need to do is ensure that all the required supporting evidence is available before the application is submitted.

Would you like to put your location in your profile ... to assist others ... merely the country would help .... click here to edit your profile.

Sorry for the lack of location, I should have at least specified that I was in the US. I only just got back to the US on Wednesday and my brain isn't fully functioning yet. So I can file my application online? That will be a huge help. The money situation is still a little vague, but it does look like that's par for the course now. Anyway, any information whatsoever is helpful right now.

And for clarification, can someone please give me an idea as to what "supporting evidence" I'm going to need?

Medina, if you look at this website you will see lots of information relevant to you.

Under "Which Visa?" click on "Settlement" and then on the sub-category of "fiancé(e)s". (Except at I post this, that webpage is not available, so keep trying)

Also details how to apply online.

After studying all that, if you have further questions then don't hesitate to ask.
