Becoming a resident of Germany

Post by rmdayz » Tue Apr 20, 2010 9:28 pm

Hello to everyone and thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

My sister was born in Germany, therefore she is a German citizen and she has lived there ever since. Our father is from South America and he was a resident of Germany.

I was born in Ecuador, South America and have lived here always. My question is the following: Is it possible for me to apply for citizenship or residence in Germany through my sister or any other possibility that will allow me to stay there in a long term basis?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated and if someone knows the procedure I will be very thankful.

Thank you very much.

No, not really possible. There could be a route via EEA law if your sister is a citizen and relocates to another EU state AND you are dependent on her.

You sure your sis is a German Citizen? U usually need a German parent, being born there is (usually!) not enough in itself.

Thanks for the reply.

My sister's mother is German. My father got divorced from her mother and later remarried to my mother. Therefore, my sister is actually my half-sister.

I found on the Internet that citizenship is only obtainable from German parents to daughters/sons, so that possibility is ruled out.

I was hoping there would be another possibility to live in Germany as a resident or at least be able to stay there in a long term basis.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for everything.

Is your sister prepared to live in another EU country?
I am no longer posting publicly on this website - PM me if needed.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

My sister is not prepared to move to another EU country. She has a good job and children of her own in Germany.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only possibility would be for her to move to another EU country and have me as a dependant? If she stays in Germany, is it not possible to have me as a dependant?

Thanks for the clarification and all your help.

Best regards

Think you would have to be a dependent in her household previously and the dependancy would have to real - ie financial etc.

I think Germany has a family reunion visa but I suspect it's more for displaced Germans from WW2 throughout the former Soviet Bloc but you might want to investigate.
