citizenship if born before 1983

Post by blobulus » Wed Jun 09, 2010 12:10 am

Hi,

As I understand , you can apply for citizenship by registration of you were born of a British mother prior to 1983(Form UKM).My mother was a British national with British protected person status at the time of my birth in 1978.Does this change things ?The term British mother does not differentiate between this terms on the home office website and hence the confusion.
Has anyone undergone the procedure and how long does it take for the application to be processed?
Any help will be appreciated

If she was a British protected person instead of a Citizen of the UK & Colonies, you're not eligible for UKM.

Are you sure of her exact citizenship status?

What you say makes absolutely no sense.

Perhaps tell us some more specific facts, like where and when was your mother born, and the same for her parents?

MY MOTHER WAS BORN IN TANZANIA IN 1952 AT WHICH TIME MY GRANDPARENTS WERE BRITISH SUBJECTS I THINK BY NATURALIZATION AS THEY WERE DEFINITELY NOT BORN IN UK

There are three requirements for UKM registration.

1. Were you born before 1983?

2. Did your grandparents become CUKC before your mother was born? If so, her birth in a protectorate would have made her CUKC at birth (not British protected person);

BUT, how would you meet the third requirement:

3. If you had been CUKC before 1983, would you have had Right of Abode in the UK under the Immigration Act 1971?

HI JAJ,
I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE GUIDANCE AND FORM ON THE WEBSITE, THE THIRD REQUIREMENT WOULD BE FULFILLED BY THE FACT THAT IF I WERE GIVEN CITIZENSHIP AT BIRTH I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TH UK IN 1983.
THE CONFUSION I HAVE IS ,
A-WHY WAS MY MOTHER A BRITISH PROTECTED PERSON IF MY GRANDPARENTS WERE BRITISH SUBJECTS
B-AND IF THIS IS AN ERROR DOES IT ALLOW ME TO CLAIM FOR CITIZENSHIP USING FORM UKM
THANKS
