Best way to get residence visa for Spain? School?

Hi everybody!

I'm a Canadian living in Germany for the past 3 years. I have now decided to try to get Spanish residency. Since I was born in Spain (of non-Spanish parents), I would like to complete the one-year residency required in order to obtain Spanish citizenship.

What would be the best way to get a resident visa for Spain for this time? Would a language course qualify?

I thought about a residence visa without a work permit, since I do my work online and am mobile. That means I would continue to receive my income from my US company. I'm not sure, but I think I saw something about a visa being available for people of independent financial means.

Can anybody please help with suggestions?
