Transition through UK and EU

Post by ium » Tue Mar 14, 2006 2:39 am

I am flying US->UK(Heathrow)->Germany(Frankfurt)->Russia. Do I need a EU or UK (transit) visas? I know I don't need it if I fly US->Frankfurt->Russia. But usually if I fly between two EU airports (like US->Amsterdam->Frankfurkt->Russia) I do need a EU visa to exit to Shengen zone. What about UK->EU flight, is it going through international or through Shengen zone?

What's your nationality and if you're not American, what is your status in the U.S.?

Any flight between the United Kingdom and a Schengen zone country is "international".

Thanks for your reply. I am Russian citizen and in US I hold a GC. There is no problem in US or Russia, I am wondering if I need UK or EU visa if I by such tickets with 2 stops - in Heathrow and in Frankfurt.

As regards whether you need a UK DATV, have a look at :-

Guidance - Transit (INF 21)

In particular have a read of the section headed "Am I exempt from the DATV requirement?". I suspect you are exempt but leave you to read the "small print" in order to make sure.

As regards the Schengen area country, I shall leave others to comment upon that but given that inter-EU trips you mention, I would suspect the answer is again that you do not need a transit visa.

You aren't going through 2 or more Schengen transit points on your US->UK->Germany->Russia flight, and therefore, like you said, the issue of the Schengen visa does not arise.

That's because, as JAJ mentioned, the UK->Germany flight is international (the UK NOT being a member of Schengen).

Transiting through Frankfurt, as you already know, doesn't involve a transit visa for your particular case.

Nor does the UK (see John's reference above).

I could cut and paste the exact visa and transit visa requirements for your particular case if you wish (unfortunately can't cross-refer), but remember, the whole situation changes if you intend to more than transit (stay longer than 24 hours) anywhere along the line!
