can i work in spain with just a spouse visa

Does anyone know if a wife who has gone to spain with spouse visa is able to work there on short term like 1 year. If not what are the procedures to be able to work in Spain.

UK spouse visa or Spanish one?

And if a Spanish one is that actually a national D type visa (i.e. how long is it valid for)? In that case I wonder if this visa wouldn't have to be exchanged for a proper residence title.
