Opportunities in mainframes in UK

Hi,

I am planning to search job staying in UK from 1st week of March 2010. I have around 5+ years experience in Mainframes and already have worked in UK for 7-8 months on Tier 2 VISA.

Can anyone who already had done this staying in UK, suggest me how the job market is in UK for mainframe candidates?

I have also the same level of experience in mainframes.
Same 6 mths exp in UK under tier-2.
I am planning to apply for tier-1 month end.

wanted to know the situation of job market in UK for mainframes.

I have 7 yrs of exp. in Mainframe(Includes 1 year europe exp.) and have HSMP TIER1 visa.Right now I am in Uk searching for jobs and got job in another platform as I have some exp. on that.Guys especially for Mainframe it's not easy as there are plenty of people available in the local market with 15+ years of exp in Mainframe.When there are few jobs and qualified people with in UK for that job, obviously non-EU people won't get a call. But I am sure the job market is picking up and mainframe market is opening up.This is what I heard and I am seeing it.As this is a slow process it will take some time.But once banking and insurance industries pick up, u will have plenty of jobs especially in Mainframe.I would advise u to come in Jan2010 and make sure that u obseve the market trend thru this period(Sep09 to Dec09) before taking a decision to come here.

I too have 7 yrs of mainframes exp and currently in India seraching jobs thru reed and CWjobs. Hows the minframe job market?? I got my tier 1 in April and am worried that no ooportunity has opened up yet. Is it wise to travel sometime in oct in serach for the job ???

I more or less know that situation is not that gr8 for mainframes right now.

But I will go ahead with Tier -1 first asap and then will see the trend on
when to come in uk.

Hi,

I have got my VISA on last Friday.

Thats only 1 week from when I applied.

Never expected so fast response.

I plan to go UK in Feb or march.

Hope d situation improves b that time!!!

Can anybody give more info on how is the Job Market for Mainframes ?

Any improvement?

I have 10 yrs of Mainframes experience and 4 years of Project Management experience.

Also any realistic info on which area of IT has more job opportunities ?

Mainframe jobs are very less in UK. Most of the advertised mainframe jobs are in mid-lands or Scotland.

You can try searching on www.cwjobs.co.uk and find how many jobs are advertised for you skillset

This site is also helpful in finding the trends of skill based jobs http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/uk/cobol.do (it shows .4%)

Guys anyone please brief me about the mainframe job market in UK? I have been applying thru all job portals in UK (CWjobs, reed etc) but no reponse till now.

Please let me know if anyone has recently started his job struggle in UK.

U might find some mainframes in a skip/dumpster outside the premises...
