hi everybody i am living in west dublin .i got application to register to vote now in the form please tick one of the opition irish,british,othereu,non eu.i am married with eu but you cant vote in european election? non eu only can vote in local election.i am just wondering if your family member of eu .why you cant vote in european election?

Thats a very good point and i'm afraid I dont have the answer.

Maybe Ben or someone could shed some light on this. Surely, if non-eu family members are suppose to have the same rights and entitlements as eu, they would be allowed to vote.

As far as I know, a person must possess citizenship of the EU in order to be entitled to vote in EU elections.

Why would a non-EU citizen be allowed vote in a EU elections or referendum? As Ben says, only EU citizens are allowed vote in EU elections. The same would be true in any country, e.g. a non-US spouse of a US citizen would not be allowed vote in US elections even if they were legally resident there on a spousal visa.

your not an eu citizen, yet.

you permission to remain here is on basis of marriage which may on eg the event of divorce, end that permission. A right to vote can't be conditional and taken away from you (unless in prison)

might be a silly question, but how do I get myself on to the voters' list/register. I have been here 10 years but haven't voted in any election here!
