Workpermit conversion and visa extension

Hi,
Iam from India working here in UK under work permit visa for a university registered with the Home Office. I would like to extend my visa and now I understand the sysyem is changed to Tier point based.Confused which Tier, I fall into and obviously can find this by calculating the points.But I heard from my friend that sponsored workpermit holders can apply in Tier2 dont need to score points for english test etc.Please could you confirm if this is true.And also please advice if it is good to take direct Home office appointment to extend my visa or can I do this thru post.Also which application form I should use ?It is so confusing in Homeoffice website.
