Immigrants arriving in Ireland should be obliged to undergo a medical examination, the overwhelming majority of Irish people think, according to the latest Sunday Independent poll.

Some 76 per cent of those polled said that in view of the outbreak of Tuberculosis (TB) in Cork last week, all arriving immigrants should be required to undergo a medical examination.

According to Quantum Research, which carried out the 500-people poll on Friday night, respondents were fearful that infectious diseases were being brought into the country by people from overseas, with many believing that some countries posed more of a risk than others.

Just 24 per cent of those polled felt that screening would have limited, if any, impact in an era in which travel to and from Ireland had become commonplace.

"In Asia, during swine flu, they scanned all people arriving for temperatures, a simple, non-discriminatory practice, that put the public's health and safety first," one female respondent said.

Immigrants arriving in Ireland should be obliged to undergo a medical examination, the overwhelming majority of Irish people think, according to the latest Sunday Independent poll.

Some 76 per cent of those polled said that in view of the outbreak of Tuberculosis (TB) in Cork last week, all arriving immigrants should be required to undergo a medical examination.

The UK does screen prospective visa seekers for TB as part of their visa process---but then NHS is free in the UK whereas here you have to shell out 60 to 70 bucks for each GP visit!!

All INIS gotta do is to introduce mandatory medical checkups report card for applicants (study, work permit, immigration etc) as part of visa application process/documentations at applicants own expense just like they have to provide bank statements, application forms etc etc, there you go...lovely lush green fields are "SAFE" from diseases.

hmm, considering our medical finest always get a diagnoises right (yeah right) it would just be another convenient way for the GNIB to refuse someone entry, even for the odd sniffles. What about those who have purposely entered Ireland to receive medical treatement for their illness?

What about them? Are you saying that people purposely enter Ireland to get treated for scot free? yeah they should get treated for being a psychiatric case, for sure. Canadian immigration law is that a person must provide medical examination which i believe is the fair process. Canadian missions around the world have reputed doctors on their panel in the country concerned who they have relationship with and ask candidates to go their and get checked out for TB/Aids/Hepatitis etc all at applicant's expense.

As far as being coming into the Ireland to get medically treated is concerned patient need to show good bit of paperwork including current treatment/hospital letters to get a visitor visa (medical category) and enough finances/Irish hospital approval letter.
