Post by karpu » Tue Aug 24, 2010 7:06 pm

Hi Team,

I got an opportunit work in Isel of Grain which is a remote place. Could you please give any suggestions how to reach there and about the accomidation. I am coming from India with my wife. People are saying that it is a very remote place and limited access to other locations.

Request you to please suggest or give me some suggestions.

Regards,
-Karpu

Isle of Grain you mean?
Well its better to get company accommodation for the first few weeks coz it is quite remote. What people say is right - it is remote, quite a distance from most places so it wont be easy settling in.
Closest train station is the Higham Railway Station about 13 miles away so you need to catch a cab to actually reach your destination which should not cost too much.

For properties to rent - check on rightmove and nestoria and you will get details. Cheapest I found on rightmove was £600 a month unfurnished and not too much of a choice. You definitely need help so make sure you have your employer to assist you in this.

The alternative is to live in a town close to Isle of Grain, find out daily buses to isle of grain and even if it takes an hour one way, its best to stay elsewhere and travel to work. Doesnt look like much of a life in this place.

If you dont mind me asking - what role did you actually secure in this place? Is it in Energy and Utilities? Once you start work, you can ask your colleagues where to live, how to commute etc.....maybe thats also an option. Stay a week in some hotel, there is The Lodge Guest House here and you should probably call them and get some first hand info.

I never heard of this place before but It took me just 5 mins to give all the info above so you better be ready to do all the research before coming here. I didnt want to be rude and snub you plus you are going to no man's land so hope the above helps you in some way.

All the best
KP

Not quite sure if it is a very remote place to work, since it is closer to the outskirts of London on the east. You could always live at a place like Gravesend or Dartford if you wish to be close to London. or a place like Rochester/Gillingham that is closer to Grain.

Below is the link to Bus services within the Medway council.

Hi All,

First of all I would like to thanks each and every one of you who helped me in resolving this. I have done some research on this and find Rochester and Allhallows and Gillingham is the nearby places to stay for few weeks.

I am going to join there as a Technical Analyst. I have already asked my employer to help in regarding the accommodation they are happy to do that.

I request you all to please let me know is there any things other things to take care regarding my travel as I am new to this place.
Regards,
-Karpu

@ Karpu,

They say a chest x-ray is required. However two of my friends carried them with them and weren't asked a word about it.

One landed in Norwich and the other in Gatwick. You can carry it with you just in case.

Also, would be helpful to others if you could share your job securing experience. Did you take up interview from India ? If yes, how did you go about applying etc ? How long did it take you, etc ?
