apply citizenship with expired passport

my friend will apply for citizenship 10 months later. his original passport has just expired. he doesn't want to apply for new passport from his original country, since it's take a long time and quite expensive, and he doesn't want to travel outside before he get UK passport.
He doesn't work and doesn't study as well.
1) Can he apply citizenship with an expired passport?
2) what kind of documents need he supply to prove he has been physically stay in UK during this year without proof in passport?
