Renew Indian passport with UK ILR visa

Post by bavaarun » Tue Apr 18, 2006 9:16 am

Hi,

My indian passport is going to expire during end of september 2006. Can I apply now to Indian High Commission to renew it? What would happen with UK ILR visa sticker? Will I need to inform Indian HIgh commission about my UK ILR visa. Could you please tell me more details about renew Indian passports?

Thanks

Arun

Hi,
I just got my passport renewed with the Indian Embassy in London. I also had ILR sticker in my previous passport. They will return the old passort back to you and put a note saying the passport is cancelled but all the visas in the passport are valid becuase i had visas to US and Canada apart from ILR. You can download the form from the website :
http://www.hcilondon.net
Fill the form and apply with 2 copies of your photo in person to the embassy as this the quickest method to get the passort renewed. It took me 1 week exactly to get it back. They will specify a date when you apply for it.
Hope this helps.

It's also worth noting that you don't need to spend good (and unnecessarily big) money having the ILR vignette transferred to your new passport. You can simply carry both passports - there is a reference to this on the IND website, but it is misbehaving as usual - I'll try and post a link later on.

[Added later] Scroll right to the bottom of this page and you'll find a paragraph reading "...However you should be aware that you are able to travel with a new, valid passport without having your leave transferred provided that you carry with it either your old passport with your endorsement of leave, or the letter on which your leave was granted."
