Name formatting variations - ILR

Post by MWill » Tue Oct 19, 2010 9:04 am

This is probably a minor thing, but I thought I'd ask - my wife got her FLR(M) in person yesterday. She's a US citizen, and one thing US passports do is that if the name has a second capital letter in it - let's say, LeBlanc - it adds a space, so it is formatted in block capitals as LE BLANC. This is standard, apparently, and can't be changed, though it's only for passports - a US drivers licence would have LEBLANC. This is the case with my wife's surname (which she's keeping), and looking at the confirmation letter, it seems her biometric ID card will have her name as shown as on the passport, which I guess is standard.

Just wondered if this may pose any issues for ILR - I know it's 2 years away, but all the documents coming to us have the name without the space (as it's really meant to be). I've got to say, that was also the case with all documents we submitted for her FLR(M) (including marriage certificate), and it didn't cause any problems there - I'm guessing as long as it's spelt right, minor variations of spacing or capitalisation shouldn't make much difference?

I can't answer for certain about UKBA, but I guess you'll be OK.
My surname includes an apostrophe, which is recognised by some databases and not by others, so my bank and credit cards all show my name differently, some with the name including the apostrophe, some with a space where it should be and some with the letters run together without it. When I book a ticket for anything online, my full surname will go on the booking, but the card to pay for it shows it differently. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

Thanks! I hope so - it's not even really a "mistake", it's just the way US passports format any name with a second capital, and that'll now be just copied onto the BRP. "Mc" names are the same. It's never been a problem for her with flight tickets, where she doesn't put the space in the name.

My name has the letter 'ü' in it, which I replaced with 'ue' on the ILR and BC application forms (since that's equivalent). I explained it separately and that didn't cause any problems, ie my original passport uses 'ü', my British passport uses 'ue'. I'm sure they are used to all kinds of variations. :)

Thanks! The Biometric Permit did indeed come through with her name with the extra space in it, as on the passport, so I'm guessing it has to match the passport - FLR guidance form said that, I think. Just hope it doesn't cause problems in 2 years when most other documents don't have the space, but common sense should rule I guess - it did with FLR.
