Getting married, whilst on an unmarried partner visa

Post by lifeguard » Wed Oct 20, 2010 8:26 pm

hi there,
no matter how many times a read the home office blurb on Certificates of Approval, I am still unsure as to whether or not i need one.
I (Australian) am in the UK in the 2nd year of an unmarried partner visa with my UK partner, and we are planning on getting married next april (before the end of the 2 year visa period, which would be july).
Can anyone tell me if I need to get the certificate of approval for the registry office (not religious ceremony)?

And yes, I am still keeping my fingers crossed that the law will be changed in the next few months and they will do away totally with the cert of approval as planned!

Thanks for your help!!

As the COA rule applies to all Non EEA who wishes to get married in the UK, I would say ''YES''.

Not really sure that being recognised as an unmarried partner of a Brit and got a visa in that capacity, it doesn't make sense to me that you should need one but the rules applies to all Non EEA's except if you are in a possession of a finacee visa which is no, in your case.

It may have been scrapped by the time you marry.
