questions about extending stay on visa waiver entry to uk

Post by esahcmailliw » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:22 am

I arrived in dublin april 7th, (where i went through customs and recieved passport stamp) then flew on to heathrowe

it was my understanding that as an american traveling here i was automaticly granted 6 months on a tourist visa??

problem.......... the stamp and date written indicates i have to leave the country on or before july 7th 2006.

so , in short, they have granted me 90 days leave............... what must i do to have this changed to 6 months, is there a fee? to whom must i apply?

Dublin is not UK and as they stamped you in they stamped you as a tourist to Ireland, not the UK. I'm pretty sure Ireland only grants a 90 day visa to non-visa nationals. As UK and Ireland have a common travel arrangement there are no real restrictions or controls between the two countries hence not being stamped at Heathrow.

To be honest I don't know how that leaves you wrt UK, I think you should be ok but may have problems leaving Ireland if your return is via that country and after the 90 days.

Having said that maybe they'll just stamp you in for another 90 days!

Maybe others can help here.

should I call the customs office at heathrowe, home office? I really do not want to violate any laws or over stay, but i would like to stay the full six months as international flights get expensive, i am already here, may as well make the most of it for the time being

anyone know who I should contact??

You need to call the Home Office.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.
