Leeway in leaving the UK

A friend has a student visa that expires on Dec 31. But he does not know yet where he is going - home or off to another country to continue studies.

Is there any official leeway that would allow him to leave the country in early January, after the Christmas rush?

For instance, is there a rule which says visa holders must exit the country within 14 days of their visa expiring?

The person will be an overstayer if he/she does not leave UK before expiry of valid visa. Exiting UK within 28 days of expiry of visa may not affect future EC applications but overstaying for more than 28 days may.
