Monthly payment to spouse on spouse visa?

Hello,

I heard of someone who has applied for spouse visa for his wife and his application was accepted. Now he pays his wife £400 monthly and says that he signed some papers which say that he has to continue such payment for 5 years. £400 a month for 5 years continous. These papers were not personal, they were official.

Just wondering if anyone know if there really is such a thing. If there is then what is the reason behind it.

Probally a payment in lieu for a sham marriage.

Its the only reason I can think off, unless someone can think of something better
