The Home Office policy instructions would suggest that it is possible for a CIMA student to obtain a TWES permit.

Extracts of paragraph 3.7.3.1 which is specifically for CIMA
“If a student is taking their study on a part time basis and combining this with the required three year work experience, a TWES permit is needed”
Due to the nature of the CIMA qualification, it is unusual to obtain experience from an accounting firm. It is however possible that external companies may have subcontracted work such as producing monthly management accounts and other routine or ad-hoc management reports to the firm concerned which would enable the candidate to obtain the relevant experience.
