Passport needs renewing, but Visa needs to be renewed first

Post by visage » Mon Feb 21, 2011 4:34 pm

Hello All,

My current passport will be needing renewal in about 6-8 months, however my current leave in UK expires in a couple of months, so I am applying for my Tier 2 (from previous PSW).

- How does this visa get transferred to a new passport? Are there any additional fees involved?

- Am I allowed to apply for the visa without my current passport if I want to renew it first? How does this process work? Is it advisable?

as a guidance, the validity of passport must be atleast 6 months when you submit a new visa app.

you dont NEED to transfer visa but if you choose to, there is a procedure in place with additional fee of 15 pounds or similar to get it done...

if i were you, i would get my passport renewed first and foremost and THEN worry about visa... it wouldnt take more than 2 weeks to get new passport right?

cheers

There is no such requirement (for leave to enter / remain applications other than as visitor).

Options:
1. You may renew your passport first (before your current leave expires) and apply for leave to remain in-time .. which will be issued as a BRP under your new passport.
2. You may apply for leave to remain (in-time) before renewing your passport, and when a new passport is issued, carry both passports (old and new) and the BRP when travelling.

See also Transferring your visa to a new passport.
