Is anyone going to stop these illegal marriages???

Post by knapps » Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:29 am

Hi Guys,
Just sharing, I thought the marriages of convenience were going to be stopped and immigration/Gardai are stopping them so those who are legitimately married will not suffer any consequences.

But, I regret to say these marriages are still taking place.

Girls are still being imported for the sole purpose of marriage of convenience.

Why is that????

Unfortunately, There is no offence under Irish law of contracting a marriage of convenience, and so Operation Charity instead involves the gardai in investigating participants in the hopes of discovering ancillary offences, such as bigamy or immigration offences, some of which have grounded the detention and deportation of would-be husbands.

Gardaí cannot prevent marriages of convenience

The Irish legal system seems intent on trying (and failing) to 're-invent the wheel' and being 'original', instead of implementing tried and tested methods used by most other EU countries.
