Stupid Friday question

Post by RobinLondon » Fri Jun 30, 2006 3:07 pm

Why is there a bull on our residence permits? It can't be a UK thing, because there was one on my German residence permit as well. Do bulls have some sort of larger significance within EU immigration policy?

As the subject line suggests, this is a stupid Friday question. Feel free to pillory me...

The German visa is from 2001. The British one from 2003. It's a bull with stars around it just above the white strip that says "United Kingdom". Looks a bit masonic.

Aha! I've just come to a possible answer. I just found this on an EU info website a few seconds ago:

Who was Europe?

The continent Europe is named after a person from Greek mythology. Europe was a princess and according to the myth she was abducted by the god Zeus (King of the Greek gods) one day when she was walking down the beach. On this occasion Zeus had transformed himself into a beautiful white bull. Zeus convinced the beautiful young girl to get on the back of the bull and swam to the Greek island of Crete. Here he transformed again and seduced her. Zeus and Europe had three sons, who all became kings.

How lovely. Really I'm just slacking off here at work on a lazy summer Friday afternoon (Don't hold that against me, Home Office!). But how nice to learn some Greek mythology as a reward for my sloth, even if the story is a bit dodgy by modern standards.

My ILR from 2003 only has a crown ... no bull here. So no venture into Greek mythology for me.

my ILR looks like this:

I definitely don;t have that. my UK visa was simply a stamp transferred at airport years ago - at the time that u still no need to pay for transferring stamps. It only says: leave to remain till xxx, + a visa number, there's even no "UK" on the stamp... I never had problems entering this country but in any other countries I left for UK, the boader ususally had to find out a supervisor to confirm my visa is valid...

I think slacking off is our only reward for putting up with the home office. Anyway it’s a great English tradition and they do want us to integrate (don’t they?)

This is my residence permit. You can see the hotly-debated moo down towards the bottom:
