Dependent Relative Under 65 - Serious Illness

Post by puzzledbrit » Thu Apr 28, 2011 8:29 am

Dear all,

I am hoping that someone can assist me with this because I'm literally at my wits end.

My mother in law was diagnosed in October with a type of brain tumour for which no treatment is available in her home country. She was told by her government to seek private treatment abroad as they cannot/will not assist in any capacity. Indeed, they do not have the facilities to provide the treatment she requires anyway.

As a result of this condition and the associated symptoms, she is now unable to work due to issues with balance and many other things. This has left her with no income at all and she will shortly become wholly dependent on myself and my wife for support.

My wife and I are both British citizens.

I believe our only option is to bring her here for medical care but we cannot afford to pay for private treatment as the sums involved are enormous, even selling our home is not an option due to negative equity and our savings do not begin to cover the cost.

I am unsure where this leaves us in practical terms. If we are unable to bring her here for medical care she will die, yet I do not see any immigration option which is available to us, at least not in any of the standard categories. I have sight of form SET(F) which includes questions about medical conditions. Are conditions such as tumours grounds for instant refusal?

Looking forward, even if she obtained treatment elsewhere which is highly unlikely, she will almost certainly remain dependent on us financially for the rest of her life and potentially need around the clock care.

My wife and I have always worked and never claimed a single penny in benefits of any type.

Is anyone able to offer any advice as to possible avenues we can explore? In this particular case, time is of the essence as her condition continues to worsten and is life threatening.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.
