Social Security number

Post by jasonjason99 » Mon Apr 17, 2006 10:27 am

Hi. My wife has received approval for a green card as the spouse of a US citizen. (We went through the whole process at the US Embassy in London.) She now has an immigrant visa in her passport and a sealed package of documents to hand to the immigration officer when we enter the US.

Can anyone provide any insight into what to expect when we enter the US? Specifically, I'm interested in two things:

-- How long does the whole process take at the port of entry?

-- How soon will my wife get her Social Security number? Any tips on whether it's faster to apply in person at the social security office or to ask the officials at the port of entry to process the request?

Thanks in advance...
