Brazilian Girlfriend to Visit UK but Worried

Dear All,

In September my girlfriend from Brazil is to visit me for just over a month. We met when I worked in Brazil for a year in 2010. I have heard some serious horror stories about Brazilians being deported for no reason, although they do not need a Visa it seems difficult to enter. Would any of you be able to tell me what she will need or if I need to do anything?

Will she be staying with you during the whole trip?

Who is funding her trip?

Does she have a job, family, tenancy etc. in Brazil?

Check the requirements for visitors at paragraph 41 of the Immigration Rules here:

Non-visa nationals still have to satisfy these requirements.

Proof that she will return to Brazil, and that she can fund her trip, are probably going to be the key issues. As she is visiting her boyfriend, "returnability" is important to confirm that she's not intending to stay longer or try to settle down after entering the UK.

Yes she will be staying with me for the whole trip. Well, while I will help out, she is funding the trip. Although I did buy the ticket for her.

A copy of her bank statement with the a few thousand pounds worth of Reals, a letter from her University, and a contract from her employer are what I am planning on getting her to show. I am worried that she does not speak English, will this be a problem?

Are there normally problems for Brazilians entering the country? Is it best not to label our relationship at all and leave it that we are friends?

I would be truthful about your relationship on two points.
1. If the Immigration entry officer believes she is being less than truthful if questioned about your friendship they could take the view that there may be more to hide.
2. In the future if you decide to apply for a fiancee or spouse visa you will be asked when the relationship began. Remember that everything is on record.

Kitty has given you really good advice regarding paperwork showing she has a strong reason to return. This is what they're looking for.
Alternatively, although she doesn't require a visitor visa, why not apply for one and have peace of mind?

That is good advice regards the relationship, I will write it in the letter.

I will ensure she has evidence with regards her ties back in Brazil. University and Employment. Would family evidence be appropriate, such as photos?

Who will question her if she does not speak English?

I would consider the Visa but would like to avoid the £75 plus all the sending of paperwork. Unless you think that she is likely to get sent back at the boarder?

There must be hundreds of Brazilian tourists in England?

I am writing to confirm I wish to invite Mrs Daniela Or**** to visit me in the UK for 34 days between the 12th of September and the 17th of October.

I am a British Citizen, a Medical Writer by profession and work at MedSense in Hazelmere. I will be on vacation for three weeks during this time and she will be with family for the remaining time. Mrs Ori**** and I are in a relationship and met during 2010 when I lived in Argentina and Brazil for a year and a half. I am able to provide accommodation, food and transport for the duration of her entire stay in the UK.

Mrs Ori**** is a linguistics student at the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. She is visiting during a break in her studies and will return to finish the degree. Mrs Ori**** also works as a freelance reviser of medical books for Group A publishing in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Mrs Or****’s whole family is based in Porto Alegre.

You are quite right about the horror stories regarding Brazilian nationals. Unfortunately Brazilians, justified or unjustified, have a bit of a reputation for overstaying.

However,in your girlfriend's case I cannot really see a problem. The letter you have written should be perfect for the IO on the control.

Definitely NOT hiding your relationship is the way to go, IOs are no fools and a single lady coming to see a single guy for so long automatically raises suspicion if she claims not to be in a relationship with him. The only other thing I would advise is that her proof of employment and study is translated into English, also her latest payslip would be useful.

Normally there are translators available at the immigration control to help with language difficulties and I know quite a few IOs who speak Portuguese or can make themselves understood to Brazilian passengers in Spanish.

Honestly I can't see a problem for you on the basis of what you have said but let us know what happens.
