Born in Montserrat in 1972. Am I a british citizen?

Post by africanbeauty » Mon May 30, 2011 10:59 pm

I was born in Montserrat in 1972. Both my parents are Montserratian and were married at the time. They and I moved to Canada in 1977 and we all got Canadian citizenship in 1980. I have been living there ever since.
I have been reading the British Overseas Territories 2001 bill and it says that BOTCs like me automatically became british citizens in 2002. Does that apply to people that left BOT countries before then?
Also, i have a grandmother and other relatives that emigrated to the uk and i think now are now british citizens

any explanation would be so helpful...

Acquisition of Canadian citizenship in 1980 did not cause loss of UK & Colonies citizenship.

Hence, on 1.1.1983 you all became BDTC/BOTC and then on 21 May 2002, it looks like you all became British citizens.

Any Canada born children you have are also British citizens (and BOTC) by descent.

HOWEVER, whether you still have "belonger status" in Montserrat depends on the territory's immigration laws.
