Life in the UK test and ILR - Link to report

Following from John's advice, I took the Life in the UK test earlier this month. I passed, and I intend to use it when the time comes for naturalisation, particularly since there doesn't appear to be any time limit for the actual pass.

If you look on page 24 of the IND review published yesterday, it mentions that migrants wishing to settle will be required to have English language skills. That sounds like another test to me.

I wonder if people who have passed the Life in the UK test, which is required for naturalisation, will be able to apply that to the ILR stage. I mean the examined material should after all correspond to a higher level of expectations. Instead of there being an option for people to take one higher level test to satisfy both stages, I foresee the implementation of two tests, each with its own price tag. I'll gladly hope to be proved wrong.

This is not a new suggestion from the Government. It was suggested a couple of years ago that the language test would be moved from the Naturalisation stage to the ILR stage.

The detail has yet to emerge. Hopefully anyone who has already passed the Citizenship Test, and therefore proved their language ability, will be exempt from any further test.
