marriage

Post by joe31 » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:09 pm

Hi,
I am soon to go on holiday to Romania to visit my fiancee, she wishes for us to marry in Romania so her family may be present - what happens after I return home - will she be able to join me in UK later and what will be her status in UK?

Many thanks...

What's your status in the UK - British citizen, permanent resident etc?

This page on the UKVisas website should help... Your fiancee will soon be on first-name terms with the ECO in Bucharest!

Joe31, you say "what happens after I return home - will she be able to join me in UK later and what will be her status in UK?" ... to which I say .... why? That is, why are you not intending to try to bring her back with you?

Lots of helpful information on the website of the Visa Section of the British Embassy in Bucharest.

Or is it that you are tempted to leave her in Romania until that country joins the EU, after which she can just use her Romanian passport to go to the UK? If that is your plan be aware :-
The EC aims to issue a final monitoring report before October 2006, which will either propose entry to the EU on 1 January 2007 or recommend a delay. Under the terms of Romania’s Treaty of Accession the latest date for joining the EU is 2008.
-: so no date of entry is guaranteed at the moment.

And even if Romania does join the EU on 1.1.07, there will likely be strong pressure on the Government to invoke the 7 year exemption from free movement of labour.

That maybe true but it would not stop a Romanian citizen entering the UK visa-free. It would merely stop them working.

But taking all this into account I think it is far better for Joe31 to get his wife (as she will be) a spouse visa shortly after the marriage has happened. That way there is a clear path forward ... she would have the ability to work as soon as she gets to the UK .... ILR after nearly two years .... naturalisation after three years if she wants it.
