Tax return filing issue - advise needed!

Post by aliazim2000 » Thu Jun 23, 2011 1:04 am

Hi everyone,

I have a Green card but have been working in the UK since last year. I filed this year's US Tax return using the 1040NR tax form, which is the non-resident alien tax return. I have researched about this recently and have found that Green Card holders, irrespective of their location, must NOT file a non-resident alien tax return.

Can someone please advise me whether this can have a potential negative impact on my Green Card? And should I file the 1040 form from next year?

I had filled the 1040NR on the advise of the IRS staff in the US Embassy. I would really appreciate your advise.

You should never take the advice of anyone working for the government - the US Supreme Court has ruled that you cannot rely as accurate on any information given to you by a government employee.

Your question is way too complicated for this forum. You can try asking it in the following forum, where a few immigration attorneys post occasionally:
