Benefits of British passport for young children

Post by critizza » Tue Jul 05, 2011 12:04 pm

We have got our ILR and are considering applying for British Passports for our 2 young children. We shall be relocating back to India soon .
Are there any advantages for the children in having a British passport and PIO whilst in India when we are still with our Indian passports? Please advise.

Well based on current laws/policy, having a British Passport will give them access to the UK/EU, so they can live and work here if they want to. Also they can travel to visa-free countries on a UK Passport (as tourists). If they get PIO on their UK Passport, it will have to be renewed every 15 yrs (subject to validity of UK Passport).

If you plan to stay in India indefinately and think that its better for them to have Indian Passports then that is your choice.

Were the children born after you recieved ILR or before?
If they were born after, then once you leave the UK you won't be able to apply for British citizenshipfor them anymore.
Also, once they are British citizens they loose their Indian citizenship, as far as I know.

If your children have a UK Passport, then will have to pay a higher fees (NRI fees) for colleges in India. Not so sure about schools, but I have not personally come across schools which have a NRI fee.
