Got the visa approved in 4 weeks time (Tier 1 General Ext - Main & Dependant application)
Used the cover letter from ‘Sticky’
Please find below the processing timelines
1. Current visa: Tier 1 (General) + 1 Dependant
2. Date of expiry of current leave: Oct 2011
3. Date application posted: 13 June 2011
4. Date application reached: 14 June 2011
5. Payment deducted: 15 June 2011(Credit Card)
6. Biometric email received: 17 June 2011
7. Acknowledgment letter received: 20 June 2011
8. Biometric letter received: 22 June 2011
9. Biometric Taken : 24 June 2011 - London Croydon
10. Date (new) leave to remain valid: July 2013 (2 Years)
11. Date passports received: 11 July 2011
12. Date BRP received: 12 July 2011

I applied via post and submitted following documents:
Main Applicant
1. Tier 1 (General) Application Form
2. Supporting Document Checklist
3. Covering Letter (used ‘sticky’ format)
4. Point Based Calculator copy from UKBA website
5. The appropriate fee
6. Photograph-2
7. Valid Passport
8. Masters Degree Certificate (Qualification and English Language)
9. Original Formal Payslips – Previous Employer
10. Online Payslips print on letterhead [Signed and stamped] – Present Employer
11. Letter from the present employer confirming claimed earnings
12. Current Account- Original Bank Statements covering 12-month period (Past Earnings)
13. Saver Account - Original Bank Statements covering 4-month period (Maintenance Funds More than £1333)
Dependant
1. PBS Dependant Application Form [Tier 1(General)]
2. The appropriate fee
3. Photograph -2
4. Valid Passport
5. Old Passport, which contains valid Dependent Visa
6. Original Marriage Certificate
7. Saver Account - Original Bank Statements covering 4-month period - (Enclosed in the Main Applicant Section)
It’s not required to submit the degree certificate again (for qualification and English language) - but I did.
I have previous visa, which can be added to the 5 year period for ILR, so I applied early.
Few suggestions
•It’s a good idea to do a checklist for supporting documents
•If you are in doubt, whether any mandatory document is not acceptable then it could be favourable to add another one in addition (just for your peace of mind)
•It’s very essential to follow the photograph guidelines: use latest photographs, preferably taken from the standard photo booths (Post office, shopping centre etc)
•For maintenance funds I submitted latest bank statement for 4 months (instead of 3 months- seen people having problems, with dates) If possible submit the original bank statements, which have bank logo
•Do check the version of the application forms (prior to submission)
•I submitted all the supporting documents in separate plastic envelopes with stick notes- in order to assist caseworker, and bank statements- salary payments highlighted (past earnings)
•If paying by credit-debit card: do inform your bank in advance regarding the payment
• BRP: On delivery, the courier asked for proof of identity (For each applicant) and a signature to confirm receipt of the package (one of the document- passport, driving licence, credit-debit card)
