Working Holiday Visa to SEGS?

Post by danii » Tue Aug 08, 2006 9:09 pm

Hi

Sorry to keep posting on here with different questions, but everyone is so knowledgable and I'm still trying to find a way to extend my stay in the UK.

I completed my degree in 2005. My student visa expired 31 October 2005.
I am now on a Working Holiday Visa which expires in 2007.

I found the following requirement for applying for SEGS:
"Have completed their course in the last 12 months (as shown by the date of expiry of leave as a Student to complete this course)"
I take it this means I have until 31 October 2006 to apply.

I know the Working Holiday visa is a tricky one, so will I need to leave the country to apply for the SEGS visa? Will it matter that my WHV has not expired when I apply for SEGS? If I have to wait until it expires in 2007, I will no longer be eligible to apply for SEGS.

Thanks in advance for all your help,

Danii

What benefit will you get from a SEGS visa which cant be obtained via a WHMV?
Where there is a will there is a way.

Hi Chess

No benefit really, apart from the fact that I will be able to work for one more year. I'm only allowed to work until October on my WHMV.

Another question might be why aren't you considering a proper work permit?
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

I'm sorry but SEGS eligibility period is counted from the day you received your results and not the day the student visa expired.

I take it back. It refers to the list of courses. You're probably ok till (1 yr + end of student visa).

Doesn't it mean that you have to study between October and 2007 whatever date WHMV expires? If that's so SEGS could be a problem from my limited knowledge on this subject.

Thanks for your reply coyote.

This whole thing is so confusing!

All I want is to be able to stay in the UK and continue at my job which I really like :(
I was speaking to someone today who said that I can return to my home country, and then get my employer to apply for a work permit for me, then apply for Entry Clearance to the Uk
.
He used to work at the home office and he said I could do this before my WHMV expires. I previously thought my WHMV had to expire before I could do this.

Can anyone advise on this?

Thanks again

According to the switching rules you should have been in WHMV for atleast 12 months and possess an in-country WP to switch. No need for another EC.

Quoting from the website:
Working holidaymaker who has spent more than 12 months in total in the UK in this capacity and who holds a valid in-country work permit approval for employment in an occupation listed on the Work Permits (UK) Shortage Occupations List; or

Hi

Sorry to bump, but does anyone know the answer to my previous question:

I know the Working Holiday visa is a tricky one, so will I need to leave the country to apply for the SEGS visa? Will it matter that my WHV has not expired when I apply for SEGS? If I have to wait until it expires in 2007, I will no longer be eligible to apply for SEGS.

The reason I didn't apply for SEGS straight after my degree is that I didn't know I was eligible :( Now I'd like to switch to that.
