I am neither a Networking chap nor an SAP professional. But I at least have a fair idea of IT consulting because I have been doing that for the last 10 years. I would comment only on SAP.

SAP is definitely hot and appears to have longevity. But the entry barrier is too high now a days. For functional SAP entry, you'd be up against fellas with years of hard core functional experience. For technical SAP career, there is a glimmer of hope. If you do decide to plunge in, I'd suggest going for such SAP specialisation which is rather new and therefore doesn't have seasoned professionals.

For more on SAP career, read Jon Reed's columns online.
