This can't be true.....

Post by carolinebox » Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:54 pm

I am a New Zealand passport holder living in Canada. This is my 2nd year living and working in Canada on an employer sponsored work permit. I wish to drive from Banff Alberta to Monteral (but through some of the US states, Montana, Michigan etc). I have been told that entering the US on a visa waiver and then returning to Canada 2 weeks later is not recognised as leaving the USA.

I therefore would have to leave the American CONTINENT within 90 days of the visa waiver being apporved in order for me to obtain another one in the future....can this be true? Why does the US not recognise Canada as seperate country?

Help?
Confused Kiwi

They are a different country. They have different immigration laws.

What you have been told is incorrect. Travelling to Canada while under the VWP does not reset the 90 days clock unless you are resident in Canada.

I have done this journey many times (not that exact journey, but have crossed land borders) and there are American border officials who stamp you in and out and they also have a computer to update your status as you enter and leave the US. Just like in the airport, but on land.

You can't extend your stay under the VWP.
