Damaged Indian passport

Post by Kiran234 » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:41 pm

Hi,

I need your help and advise here, i had applied for naturalisation and have now received the approval letter, and have the ceremony booked for next week.

during this period my 2 year old daughter spilled water on my indian passport and damaged it and i have applied for a replacement passport and waiting for the last 6 weeks to get the replacement and still there is no clue of my passport and everytime i write an email i get a standard answer "Your file is under processing please email/call after one week"

My qyestion is that i would like to apply for the british passport and would like to know if there is a way out or if anyone have come across the similar problem .

Thanks for the help
Kiran

Why would you need your Indian Passport now ? You do not need it now to get a British Passport

Once you get your British Passport, even if your passport was soaked in water, if you can still read the typed information, then all you need to do is submit it to VFS and get a surrender letter and then get started on your OCI application.

Since you have already applied for a new passport, wait for it (as HCI does take sometime to issue it). I assume here that your passport was damaged beyond the point that details on it became illegible

Hi Kiran,

Im sorry i can't be of any help to you as i am in exactly the same situation as you are. Ive been waiting for over 2 months now for a replacement of my damaged passport. Ive emailed them many times and all i get is a standard one line reply "call back after 1-2weeks for status"

If you find a way out please do let me know. I'll do the same if i find something.

Regards
Nic

I would suggest that you go to your nearest Post Office where they have "Check and Send" service (See link below on how to find the closest one).
Take your current passport with you (the damaged one) and see if they accept that as the 'Passport with which you entered the country' (which you did actually in this case). They might accept your damaged passport and you might get your UK Passport application started. Waiting on your new Indian Passport is not fetching you anything, so might as well try this and see how it goes.

I did not know they took your old passport back. A friend of mine (in the US) left his passport in his pocket and it went through a heavy load cycle in his washing machine for about 45 mins. He applied for a new passport which took him 2 months, but he did have his original damaged passport with him (along with his visa documentation to prove that he was legally in the US). I did not realize that they took your passport too. Its a good thing that you will soon have a naturalisation certificate so you have some proof of your legal status in the UK.

I think it would be illegal for you to obtain an Indian passport once you attend the ceremony. You may be presented with a hefty fine when the officials compare the issue dates between your passport and nationality certifucate, when you apply for your surrender certificate. You might want to postpone your ceremony until you get your Indian passport.

I'm not sure about it my case is a bit different to give you a timeline mine is somewhat like this..

Passport Damaged - February
Applied for Replacement - 3rd Feb 2011
Applied for Naturalisation - 18th Feb 2011
Expecting to get the Naturalisation this week

so going by the dates i have applied for the replacement even before i apply for naturalisation and if they have delayed in giving it to me it is not my problem.. all i can do is collect the passport and surrender it the next day with all the proofs (hoping so) or as an other option i will wait for my naturalisation approval and then go to indian embassy to withdraw my application and get my damaged passport back, then apply for a british passport and surrender the damaged indian one..

Hi,

Just like with other countries a damaged or lost passport must be reported to the authorized office for passport replacement.
