flying back to England via Ireland on a student visa

Post by acs623 » Sat Aug 20, 2011 12:38 pm

Hi,

I'm doing an MA course and I'm thinking about going back to the U.S. for a few weeks after I've finished my dissertation. When fly back to England, I am considering stopping in Ireland for a couple of days to visit a friend before flying back to England. Presumably, I will go through immigration in Ireland, but not in England and I was just wondering if that would cause any issues? I know that there is the CTA between Ireland and England, but I'm not quite sure how that applies to someone on a student visa in the UK and if I would have any problems when I go through Irish immigration? When I return, my UK student visa will be valid for another 3 1/2 to 4 months, if that information is relevant.

If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance :)

In your case it won't be a problem and you can enter IRL as a visitor under the mutual visa-waiver program. When you cross over into the UK it will not matter if you are not checked as you already have existing leave that was activated. If you had been entering for the first time on that leave it would be useful to go looking for a UK Border Force officer on arrival in the UK as the initial stamp placed over the visa vignette would be proof of initial entry.
